Eligibility to claim

To claim working from home expenses, you must:

  • Work from home to fulfill employment duties, not just minimal tasks

  • Incur additional running expenses due to working from home

  • Have records showing these expenses

Use one of the methods below to calculate your deduction. For expenses used for both private and work purposes, only claim the work-related portion.

Additional running expenses

You can claim deductions for additional running expenses incurred due to working from home, including:

  • Energy expenses for heating, cooling, and lighting

  • Internet and data expenses

  • Phone expenses

  • Stationery and office supplies

  • Decline in value of work-related depreciating assets

  • Repairs and maintenance to depreciating assets

In limited cases with a dedicated home office, you may also claim:

  • Occupancy expenses (mortgage interest or rent)

  • Cleaning expenses

Include any employer allowance for working from home expenses as income in your tax return.

Choosing a calculation method

From 1 July 2022, two methods are available:

  1. Fixed rate method: 67 cents per work hour for additional running expenses, plus separate amounts for expenses not covered by the fixed rate.

  2. Actual cost method: Claim actual expenses incurred from working from home.

Keep records to show expenses incurred. The type of records depends on your chosen method.

Expenses you can't claim

You can't claim deductions for:

  • General household items (coffee, tea, milk)

  • Children's education-related costs

  • Employer-provided items

  • Reimbursed expenses

Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra.
